Brickwork picks up staining over the decades, from general weathering and pollution to algae growth and, sometimes, residue from previous repairs. Cleaning can make a genuine difference to a property's appearance, but it's an area where the wrong method causes more harm than the staining ever did.
The single biggest risk in brick cleaning is using a method too aggressive for the brick involved. Sandblasting and overly harsh high-pressure cleaning can strip away the harder, fired outer face of a brick, exposing the softer, more porous material underneath. Once that protective face is gone, the brick weathers and stains considerably faster than before, meaning an aggressive clean can actually make a property look worse within a few years rather than better. This is a particular risk on older, softer bricks common on Victorian and Edwardian York properties.
Low-pressure water washing – the gentlest approach, suitable for general dirt and light staining
Steam cleaning – effective for organic growth like algae and moss without the abrasive risk of high-pressure water or sandblasting
Chemical cleaning – specific products formulated for particular stains such as efflorescence (the white, powdery salt deposits sometimes seen on brick) or paint removal, used carefully and tested on a small area first
Gentle mechanical cleaning – for stubborn, localised staining, using methods and pressures matched to the brick's hardness rather than a one-size-fits-all approach
Before recommending a cleaning method, we look at the brick's condition and hardness, since a method safe for hard modern engineering brick can seriously damage a soft, older handmade brick. We always test on a small, inconspicuous area first, so any risk is identified before it's applied across the whole wall.
We take a cautious approach to brick cleaning, matching the method to the brick rather than defaulting to whatever's quickest. We work across York and North Yorkshire, and every quote is clear and written, including which method we're proposing and why.
Excellent job from Phil and his team. Both external and internal works finished to an excellent quality. Happy to deal with changes and kept us informed on a day-to-day basis. Definitely recommend.
