Like natural turf, the quality of the finished result depends heavily on what goes underneath. Proper installation involves:
Removing existing turf and vegetation, along with topsoil to the required depth
Installing a permeable sub-base, allowing water to drain through rather than pooling on the surface
A weed membrane to prevent growth coming up through the artificial surface
Laying and securing the artificial grass, with joints between rolls carefully matched so the pile direction is consistent and seams aren't visible
Adding sand or rubber infill where the product specification calls for it, to help the blades stand upright and add stability
A properly installed artificial lawn is permeable, allowing rainwater to drain through the backing and sub-base rather than pooling on the surface, similar in principle to permeable paving. This matters both for the lawn's own performance in wet weather and, in front gardens, for the same reasons permeable surfacing matters for driveways.
