A well-built pond or water feature adds genuine character to a garden, whether that's a wildlife pond, a formal reflective pool, or a simpler running water feature as part of a wider landscaping scheme. RW Builders builds ponds and water features for gardens across York and North Yorkshire.
Where a pond sits affects how well it performs as much as how it looks. Too much direct sun can encourage algae growth, particularly in a smaller pond without adequate plant cover, while a position under overhanging trees means more leaf litter to clear in autumn, which can affect water quality if left to accumulate. We'll talk through positioning as part of the design rather than treating it purely as a question of available space.
Wildlife ponds – designed with shallow margins and planting to encourage frogs, newts and insects, generally the lowest-maintenance option once established
Formal ponds – geometric, structured designs with a defined edge, often built alongside patios and formal garden layouts
Ornamental fountains and cascades – running water features, from a simple bubbling urn to a more elaborate cascade over stonework
Koi and fish ponds – built with greater depth and proper filtration to support fish long-term, needing more careful design than a purely ornamental pond
Garden ponds and water features generally don't require planning permission, since they're treated as ordinary garden landscaping. Very large ponds or those involving significant excavation and retaining structures can raise separate considerations, which we'll flag if relevant to your specific design.
Open water in a garden carries a genuine safety consideration, particularly where children may visit or live at the property. Options to manage this include shallow-margin designs that reduce depth near the edges, submerged grates or mesh just below the surface, and fencing or gates around a deeper pond where appropriate. We'll talk through this as part of the design process rather than assuming it's not a consideration.
Beyond the initial build, pond water quality depends on ongoing balance between plants, fish stocking levels (if any), and filtration. Overstocking a pond with fish relative to its size and filtration capacity is a common cause of poor water quality and algae problems later on, so we factor intended fish stocking into the initial design rather than treating it as something to figure out after the pond is built.
Lining – a properly sized and fitted pond liner, or a preformed unit for smaller ponds, avoiding creases and stress points that can lead to leaks over time
Filtration and pumps – essential for any pond intended to support fish, and beneficial even for wildlife ponds to keep water clear and healthy
Electrical supply – any pump or lighting needs a safely installed outdoor electrical connection, notified under Part P where required Edging – stone, decking or planting around the pond edge, both for appearance and to conceal the liner or preformed unit's edge
We're a family-run team based in York, and we build ponds and water features properly from the groundwork up, considering safety, filtration and long-term maintenance rather than just the finished appearance on day one. We work across the city and surrounding villages including Haxby, Strensall, Poppleton and Skelton, and every quote is clear and written with no hidden extras.
Excellent job from Phil and his team. Both external and internal works finished to an excellent quality. Happy to deal with changes and kept us informed on a day-to-day basis. Definitely recommend.
