The windows and doors on a new extension do more work than almost any other element, they bring in natural light, connect the new space to the garden, and are usually the single biggest visual feature of the finished room. Getting this right is as much about the build as it is about the final look.
Bifold doors – fold back completely to open the full width of an extension to the garden, popular on kitchen and dining extensions
Sliding doors – a cleaner, more minimal look than bifolds, often preferred where you want an uninterrupted view when closed
French doors – a more traditional option, particularly common on smaller extensions or period properties
Roof lanterns and rooflights – bring light into deeper extensions, particularly side returns and wraparounds where natural light from the rear alone isn't enough
Standard windows – matched in style and proportion to the rest of the house, especially important on older York properties where window design contributes significantly to the building's character

New windows and doors fitted as part of an extension need to meet current thermal performance standards (measured as a U-value), and must comply with building regulations covering things like safety glazing in doors and low-level windows, and ventilation. Where a side-facing window is being fitted as part of a loft conversion or extension close to a boundary, it will usually need to be obscure-glazed to protect neighbours' privacy, a specific condition under Permitted Development rules.
We coordinate windows, doors and glazing as part of the full extension build, working with suppliers to specify options that suit your budget and the style of your property, rather than treating it as an afterthought once the structural work is finished. Every quote is clear and written, and the work is covered under our standard insurance for the project.
Phil is a very friendly and knowledgeable builder. Communication was good throughout our extension build. I would not hesitate to recommend him to family and friends.
