Cills and copings are small elements compared to the rest of a build, but they do an important job protecting the brickwork and stonework beneath them from water damage, and a wall or window without proper detailing here tends to deteriorate faster than one that's finished correctly.
Cills – sit beneath a window opening, projecting slightly and sloped to shed rainwater away from the wall below rather than letting it run down the brickwork face
Copings – sit on top of a wall, particularly garden and boundary walls, protecting the exposed top course of brick or stone from water penetrating downward into the wall
Without a properly sloped cill, water running down a window can sit against the wall below rather than being thrown clear, leading to staining and, over time, damp penetration. Similarly, a wall without a coping (or with a damaged one) allows water to soak directly down into the top of the wall, which is a common cause of frost damage and gradual deterioration in garden walls, since the top of a wall without water shedding away from it faces more sustained exposure than a wall face protected by copings.
Stone – natural stone cills and copings, matching the character of a period property or a stone-built wall
Concrete – a practical, cost-effective option, cast to a range of profiles
Brick-on-edge – bricks laid on their edge as a simple, traditional coping detail, common on older garden walls across York
We fit cills and copings as part of our wider stonework, bricklaying and general building work across York and North Yorkshire, and we treat these details as genuinely important to the longevity of the finished wall or opening rather than an afterthought. Every quote is clear and written, and the work is covered under our standard project insurance.
Excellent job from Phil and his team. Both external and internal works finished to an excellent quality. Happy to deal with changes and kept us informed on a day-to-day basis. Definitely recommend.
