York and the surrounding North Yorkshire countryside have a strong tradition of stone building, from Yorkstone paving and steps to the magnesian limestone used across much of the city's older architecture. RW Builders carries out stonework for homeowners across York and North Yorkshire, from garden features through to stone detailing on extensions and renovations.
Where possible, we source stone from suppliers working with Yorkshire quarries, since locally sourced stone tends to weather in a way that's consistent with the surrounding buildings and landscape, rather than a stone type imported from elsewhere that can stand out over time as it weathers differently. This matters particularly for extensions to period properties, where the finished result is judged against neighbouring stonework that's been weathering for a century or more.
Yorkstone – a durable sandstone historically quarried across Yorkshire, widely used for paving, steps and garden walling, valued for its natural, slightly textured finish and the way it weathers over time
Magnesian limestone – a paler stone associated with much of York's historic architecture, including York Minster itself, sometimes specified for repair or extension work on period properties where matching the local stone tradition matters
Reclaimed and reconstituted stone – used where matching an existing stone building is the priority, or where a natural stone look is wanted at a lower cost than quarried stone
Traditional dry stone walling, built without mortar at all, relies entirely on the careful selection and placement of stones so they interlock and support each other's weight. It's a technique still used across North Yorkshire's rural areas, particularly for field boundaries and traditional-style garden walls, though it's a specialist skill that takes considerably longer than a standard mortared wall of the same length. Most residential garden walls we build use a lightly mortared approach instead, which gives a similar traditional appearance with less risk of long-term movement, though genuine dry stone construction remains an option where the traditional method and appearance genuinely matter to the project.
Garden steps and paving, particularly Yorkstone-style flags and steps
Garden and boundary walls, in natural or reconstituted stone
Stone cladding, giving a stone appearance to a new extension without the cost of full solid stone construction
Cills and copings, finishing brick or stone walls to shed water properly and give a clean, finished edge
Repair and restoration of existing stonework on older York properties
Stonework generally needs a different skill set to standard brickwork, since natural stone varies in size and shape far more than manufactured brick, and getting a good finish means working with the stone's natural variation rather than forcing it into uniform coursing. This is particularly true for dry stone or lightly mortared garden walling, where the stones need to be selected and placed to interlock properly for long-term stability, rather than simply stacked and mortared together.

Stonework on an existing house, such as repairs or a new stone wall, generally follows the same rules as other masonry work: standalone garden walls have height-based limits (covered in detail on our garden and boundary walls page), while stone cladding applied to the exterior of an existing dwelling is not permitted development on designated land such as conservation areas, and would need full planning permission there regardless of the stone type used.
We're a family-run team based in York, and we understand the local stone tradition, from Yorkstone paving to the way older York properties use magnesian limestone. We take on stonework across the city and surrounding villages including Haxby, Strensall, Poppleton and Tollerton, and every quote is clear and written with no hidden extras.
Excellent job from Phil and his team. Both external and internal works finished to an excellent quality. Happy to deal with changes and kept us informed on a day-to-day basis. Definitely recommend.
