A new lawn transforms a garden more quickly and dramatically than almost any other landscaping job, but the finished result depends far more on ground preparation than most people expect. Turf laid onto poorly prepared ground looks fine for the first few weeks and then starts showing unevenness, poor drainage, or patchy growth within a season.
RW Builders lays turf for gardens across York and North Yorkshire, whether that's a new lawn as part of a wider landscaping project or a standalone lawn replacement.
Proper turf laying involves considerably more than rolling turf out onto existing soil:
Clearing the area of existing grass, weeds and debris
Improving the soil, which for much of York's clay-heavy ground often means incorporating grit sand or organic matter to improve drainage and structure
Levelling and grading, removing high and low spots so the finished lawn drains evenly rather than pooling water in places
Firming the ground without over-compacting it, since turf laid on ground that's too loose will settle unevenly later
Laying the turf in a brick-like pattern with staggered joints, butted tightly together without gaps or overlaps
Watering thoroughly immediately after laying and regularly for the following few weeks while the roots establish
Not every lawn needs the same specification. A family garden with regular football games or a dog running across it benefits from a hardwearing, ryegrass-heavy turf mix bred for durability, while a more ornamental lawn intended purely for appearance can use a finer-leaved mix that looks more manicured but wears less well under heavy use. We'll talk through how the lawn will actually be used before recommending a turf specification.
A significant amount of ground across York and North Yorkshire has a clay content, which drains poorly compared with sandier soils and can become waterlogged after heavy rain if not properly addressed before turfing. Improving drainage before laying, rather than after problems appear, is considerably more effective and less disruptive than trying to fix a waterlogged lawn once it's established.
A newly laid lawn benefits from an initial mowing regime once established, generally starting with a high mower setting for the first few cuts before gradually lowering it. Regular feeding through the growing season and addressing any thin patches early, rather than letting them spread, keeps a new lawn looking its best well beyond the first season. We're happy to advise on this as part of handover, even though ongoing maintenance itself isn't something we provide.
Not all turf is the same quality, and cheaper turf can be thinner, weaker rooted, or contain a less desirable mix of grass species than better-quality cultivated turf. We source turf suited to the intended use, a lawn that needs to stand up to children and pets playing on it regularly needs a hardier specification than a purely ornamental lawn.
We're a family-run team based in York, and we prepare the ground properly before laying turf rather than treating it as a quick finishing job. We work across the city and surrounding villages including Haxby, Strensall, Poppleton and Skelton, and every quote is clear and written with no hidden extras.
Excellent job from Phil and his team. Both external and internal works finished to an excellent quality. Happy to deal with changes and kept us informed on a day-to-day basis. Definitely recommend.
