A pergola adds structure and a defined sense of space to a garden without fully enclosing it, and it's one of the more versatile garden features we build, working equally well over a seating area, a dining space, or as a support for climbing plants. RW Builders builds pergolas and garden structures for homeowners across York and North Yorkshire.
Traditional open pergolas – a post-and-beam structure with an open lattice roof, providing partial shade and a framework for climbing plants
Louvred or adjustable roof pergolas – a more contemporary option with roof slats that open and close to control shade and rain protection
Timber garden structures – arbours, garden arches and similar features, often built as focal points or entrance features within a wider garden design
Gazebos and garden pavilions – more substantial, generally fully roofed structures offering more complete weather protection than an open pergola
Garden structures are generally treated under the same permitted development rules as other outbuildings:
An open-sided pergola with a slatted or open roof is generally treated more leniently than a fully enclosed, solid-roofed structure, since it doesn't create the same degree of enclosed space, though the height and position rules still apply. We check your specific design and garden against these limits before quoting.
Single storey, with height limits depending on roof type, generally up to 4 metres for a dual-pitched roof or 3 metres otherwise, reducing to 2.5 metres within 2 metres of a boundary
Combined with any other outbuildings and extensions, must not cover more than 50% of the garden area
Must not be positioned forward of the principal elevation of the house
On designated land, such as conservation areas, structures to the side of the house are not permitted development

A pergola's posts carry the weight of the roof structure and, particularly for louvred designs, any wind loading on the roof panels themselves. Post foundations need sizing to suit the pergola's height and roof type, and for taller or heavier structures, particularly enclosed gazebos, an undersized foundation is a common cause of movement or leaning over time. We size foundations to the specific structure rather than using a generic approach regardless of scale.
Timber – the traditional choice for pergolas, giving a natural appearance, though needing periodic treatment to maintain its condition
Powder-coated aluminium – increasingly popular for a lower-maintenance, more contemporary look, particularly for louvred pergola systems
Stone or brick piers with a timber frame – combining masonry supports with a timber roof structure, a good option for tying a new pergola into an existing patio or garden wall
We're a family-run team based in York, and we check the planning position on your garden before finalising a design, since height and coverage limits can catch people out on structures that seem straightforward. We work across the city and surrounding villages including Haxby, Strensall, Poppleton and Wetherby, and every quote is clear and written with no hidden extras.
