Stone Cladding York

Stone cladding gives a building the appearance of solid stone construction at a fraction of the cost and structural complexity of building in full stone, and it's a popular way to give an extension or existing wall a stone finish that matches or complements a York property's character.

Types of stone cladding

Natural stone cladding – thin slices of real stone fixed to the wall structure, giving an authentic appearance and texture since it genuinely is natural stone, just applied as a facing rather than full-depth masonry

Reconstituted stone cladding – manufactured from crushed stone and cement, cast to replicate the appearance of natural stone at a lower cost

Brick slip cladding – a related product using thin slices of real brick rather than stone, useful where matching existing brickwork on a new structure is the priority

Planning permission for stone cladding

This is an area worth checking carefully before committing to a design. On designated land, such as conservation areas, cladding any part of a dwelling's exterior with stone, artificial stone, or several other listed materials is not permitted development, meaning full planning permission is required regardless of how the finished result looks. Outside designated land, cladding applied as part of an already-approved extension is generally covered under the same planning process as the rest of the build, but adding cladding to an existing house as a standalone project needs checking against the current rules for your specific property.

Fitting considerations

Stone cladding needs a suitable substrate to fix to, and the fixing method varies depending on the cladding type and the wall it's being applied to. Getting this stage right matters for the cladding's long-term stability, poorly fixed cladding can crack or, in worse cases, come away from the wall over time, particularly on external walls exposed to weather and temperature changes.
