Plastering is the stage that turns a structurally complete extension or renovated room into a finished space ready for decoration. It's also one of the areas where poor workmanship shows up clearly, an uneven or poorly finished wall is obvious the moment it's painted, so it's not a stage worth rushing.
Plastering – skimming walls and ceilings to a smooth, paint-ready finish, whether that's new plasterboard on a fresh extension or replastering an existing room as part of a renovation
Plasterboard installation – for stud walls, ceilings, and dot-and-dab finishes to solid masonry walls
Screeding – preparing floors to a level, smooth base before final flooring is laid
Coving and detailing – for period properties where matching existing decorative plasterwork matters
Making good – finishing around new sockets, radiators, and openings so the join between old and new work is invisible once decorated
Fresh plaster needs time to dry properly before decoration, generally around a week per coat in normal conditions, though this varies with room temperature, ventilation and the time of year. Painting over plaster that hasn't fully dried is one of the more common causes of finish problems later on, cracking, staining, or paint failing to adhere properly, so we won't rush this stage even if it means the overall programme runs slightly longer.
On renovation projects, particularly in older York properties, matching new plasterwork to existing walls and ceilings takes more care than working on a completely new extension. Older lime plaster behaves differently to modern gypsum plaster, and mixing the two without understanding the difference can cause problems later, including damp issues if a breathable lime-plastered wall is sealed with an unsuitable modern finish. We assess what's already there before deciding on the right approach.
